Make musical podcasts yourself – the best approach!

Written by Philipp Steigner

Podcasts have been enjoying a significant increase in popularity for several years. This also applies to musical podcasts, as these are an excellent means of increasing awareness. Nevertheless, the production of a podcast is a bit more complex if you want to make it successful. But how exactly do you implement ideas and what is important in the design? In order to answer this question for you, in this article we will show you in more detail how you can set up your first podcast and how you can use it to earn money.

Why podcasts are essential these days

Simply put, a podcast is a radio-show-like audio file available on the Internet. As with a traditional series, new episodes of the podcast are offered regularly, which means that subscribers are always up to date. One advantage of modern podcasts is that they can be played and followed on any device. As a result, the listeners are not dependent on fixed transmission times, as is the case with radio, for example, but can listen to the podcasts anytime and anywhere.

It is also advantageous that podcasts can dedicate themselves to their topics with a much greater depth. In most cases, there is no time limit for discussing important content, which allows for a clear identification with the topic. In the musical field, too, each podcast gets its own personal touch, which makes it more creative and accessible.

How to showcase your music through the podcast

A good and long-term successful podcast should have a certain recognition value. Therefore, musical components for the design of the program are definitely appropriate in order to attract a certain audience in the long run. It is often worthwhile to include musical content in addition to discussions with musicians and other important personalities. These make the podcast diverse, and offer a variety of new highlights.

With more than a third of all Germans who describe themselves as listeners to podcasts, you have a large target group for this purpose. The young generation in particular is always on the lookout for new podcasts that match their own interests. However, in order to implement a good and successful podcast yourself, there must be no lack of detailed planning.

Plan right for a successful start

Especially with musical podcasts, you shouldn’t just think from episode to episode. Create a clear structure in advance and record all the topics you want to discuss in the first few episodes of your podcast. An editorial plan for your episodes is a good way to gain a reliable audience in the long term.

With the following tips you are on the safe side for planning and thus ensure optimal preparation:

  1. Make sure you have the right technology. Only with the right equipment will your podcast meet the requirements of quality and style. A good microphone is crucial.
  2. Plan in detail how to incorporate your music into the podcast. As a rule, the combination of topics of conversation and musical content is worthwhile for your podcast.
  3. Don't just plan from episode-to-episode. Successful planning requires many of the following episodes to be prepared so that you don’t run out of things to talk about for your guests after the first few weeks.
  4. Diverse content is paramount for your podcast. For this reason, do not design every episode identically, but set different impulses in the podcast.

Name, description and format – this is how you will be found

But even the best content won't necessarily help you if you can't market the format of your podcast well. The name alone plays a decisive role in being found on common platforms. The name of your podcast should be as strong and meaningful as possible and emphasize the topic of your programs. Terms such as "news" or "update" are just as suitable as addressing the listeners directly to motivate them.

In most cases, you'll also have the option to name your podcast when you publish it. You should choose the associated lines carefully in order to find an appropriate design and to summarize the content of your podcast well. The same applies to visual elements such as the logo of your podcast to increase recognition for your audience.

Why editing and post-production are so important

In most cases, once the first episode of your podcast has been recorded, you probably want to release it as soon as possible. Before that, however, it’s important to emphasize a good edit and the right post-processing. Even classic apps can help you with the follow-up, which means that you do not incur any additional costs. In addition, of course, any common editing program is also suitable for post-editing the episode directly.

During editing, you focus on the parts of the episode where you strayed too far from the main focus. These elements often make the podcast lengthy and of limited interest to listeners. In the second step, you devote yourself to places that aesthetically diversify your podcast. This also makes the soundscape of your podcast professional.

More tips for your first musical podcast

Ideally, your listeners won’t even notice that this is your first podcast. A good setup and exciting topics will relieve the strain. Choosing a suitable hosting package for your new podcast is also very important. Since the trend is already widespread, the selection of such offers is constantly increasing. So you can easily choose a host yourself.

The following tips can also help you:

  • From a technical point of view, keep your first few episodes a little simpler.
  • Check out a tutorial or two before you hit “record.”
  • Research in advance whether it is worth recording the podcast directly in the editing program.
  • Export your musical podcast file to mp3 format after editing.
  • Choose the right platforms on which to promote your podcast.

In this respect, the content of your podcasts determines how often you can get listeners excited about your show. Especially in the field of musical podcasts, you should not only focus on conversations, but also sufficiently emphasize the music. This applies to possible programs with musicians as well as to your own design without guests. Your own songs will certainly find their place in your podcast and also loosen up the content.

With the right marketing quickly to more awareness

Without successful marketing, your musical podcast won't really gain much exposure in the first phase. Providers like Spotify list new podcasts quite reliably, but you won't be able to retain more than casual listeners without marketing at first. In most cases, some self-promotion via social media or links to your own website is worthwhile. This will help you promote your podcast and make the launch recognizable to your fans. Contacts to other musicians can also help you with this step.

Here’s where you can list your podcast

As soon as the first finished episodes are on your device, the question of publication arises. As a rule, you will receive a newly created RSS feed from your hosting service, which you can enter on the respective platforms. Which platform you choose for your podcast is entirely up to you. In most cases, the registration of the podcast is free.

The following platforms are the most well-known approaches for your musical podcast:

  • Spotify
  • Deezer
  • Apple Podcasts
  • YouTube
  • Google Podcasts
  • Amazon/Audible
  • Podimo

To increase the reach of your podcast, you can of course choose more than just one platform. The important thing is that you integrate your self-made podcasts as completely and without interruption as possible on each of the platforms. This gives your fans and listeners the flexibility to listen to the latest episodes without having to switch platforms for the next episode. This makes the musical podcast more successful episode by episode.

Benefit now from your first music podcast!

At first glance, your own podcast looks like a lot of effort and work. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to design important topics related to your own music in an exciting podcast and thereby expand your own target group step by step. Your podcast should also be considered as indirect marketing, as this can ensure significantly more awareness. If you are interested in new contacts for your music in addition to your podcast, you are always at the right address here at mukken. We can help you with our search ads for musicians.
